Council leader supports journalists

The leader of Manchester City Council, Richard Leese sent the following letter to MoC Rachel Broady.

16 February 2006

Dear Rachel

Re: Job losses at the Manchester Evening News

I have received your letter concerning the dreadful job losses at the Manchester Evening News. I certainly will be writing to the Scott Trust not least because it appears to be there, that the problems of you and your members in Manchester lie.

As I understand it, because of the way the Scott Trust is structured, whatever goes on in the real world has no impact on the running of the Guardian and Observer newspapers, and the sole purpose of the MEN is to make money to allow that state of affairs to continue.

That is a completely unacceptable situation, particularly when as a consequence we see the loss of skilled jobs in Manchester

Can I assure you of my full support.

Yours Sincerely,

Richard Leese
